Reimagining Public Spaces: How Helsinki Turned Parking Lots into Parks

Helsinki’s bold experiment in urban transformation has yielded remarkable results. Over the past three years, the city has converted 40 surface parking lots into green spaces, community gardens, and public plazas — reclaiming nearly 15 hectares of asphalt for people and nature.

The initiative, known as “Ground Up,” was initially met with skepticism from car owners and business owners alike. But the data tells a compelling story: property values in surrounding areas have increased by an average of 12%, local business revenue has grown by 8%, and resident satisfaction surveys show dramatic improvements in quality of life.

“We discovered that what people thought they needed — more parking — was actually the opposite of what they wanted,” says city planner Aino Koskinen. “They wanted places to sit, to play, to gather. They wanted their city back.”
